Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to browse and buy from The Little Jewel, in our shop on the Pearl Street Mall and on this website.

Our goal

This website aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Those guidelines explain how to make web content usable by people with disabilities, including people who are blind or have low vision, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and people who navigate with a keyboard, a switch or their voice.

What we have done

  • Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and a “Skip to content” link is the first thing you reach on every page with the site’s header.
  • The menu, the cart and other pop-up windows keep keyboard focus inside while they are open, close with the Escape key, and return you to where you were.
  • Pages are organised with headings and landmarks, so screen reader users can move around them quickly.
  • Product photographs and editorial pictures have text descriptions; purely decorative pictures are marked so that screen readers skip them.
  • The colours we use for text and controls are chosen to meet the WCAG contrast requirements against their backgrounds, and they are checked automatically every time the site changes.
  • Form fields are labelled, and errors are described in words, not only in colour.
  • Changes that happen without a page reload, such as adding to your cart or filtering a collection, are announced to screen readers.
  • Animation is kept to a minimum and is switched off if your device asks for reduced motion.

Known limitations

We know about the following and are working on them:

  • Product photos on phones without JavaScript. On a phone-sized screen with JavaScript turned off, a screen reader reaches only the first photo of a product. With JavaScript on, or on a larger screen, every photo can be reached.
  • Filters on phones without JavaScript. On a phone-sized screen with JavaScript turned off, you can sort a collection but not filter it. Everything works with JavaScript on.
  • Pages and services provided by others. Checkout, customer accounts, payment buttons such as Shop Pay, the cookie banner, the email sign-up form and the back-in-stock form are provided by Shopify and by Klaviyo, not built by us. We choose providers that publish their own accessibility commitments, and we will pass on any problem you report with them.
  • The gift card picture on the home page takes its text description from the description saved with the image. Where none has been saved, screen readers skip it as if it were decorative.
  • Older content. Some older pictures in our pages and articles may not yet have a text description. We are adding them as we find them.

Tell us about a problem

If something on this website is hard to use, or you need information in a different format, please tell us and we will help, whether by fixing the page or by helping you directly.
